How many characters are there?

Altogether there are over 50,000 characters, though a comprehensive modern dictionary will rarely list over 20,000 in use. An educated Chinese person will know about 8,000 characters, but you will only need about 2-3,000 to be able to read a newspaper.

從今天開始 與外國人介紹自己的語言時 改口說 I SPEAK MANDARIN

如果你遇到有人問你「Mandarin」是不是「Chinese」，你也可以回答說Chinese的定義很廣泛，中國境內有許許多多的語言以及在地方言，也都可以歸類在「Chinese」裡面，因此只說我的語言是「Chinese」不夠精準。正確來說我懂的是「Mandarin」，而「Taiwanese Mandarin」與大部分中國人用的「Chinese Mandarin」使用習慣上是有相當的區別的。
